Are We Alone in the Universe?

THE MYSTERY STILL WAITING FOR AN OWNER

Are We Alone in the Universe?

By Gilberto García Mecado

There are questions humanity has spent centuries asking, and which, despite the extraordinary progress of science, remain suspended above our heads like a lit lamp in an empty room: are we alone?
The question ceased to belong exclusively to science fiction when scientific and military organizations began to record phenomena they could not identify. In the United States, the phenomenon even has an official office: the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, known as AARO, tasked with investigating so-called UAPs—anomalous objects or phenomena that cannot be immediately identified. Its existence is no longer a secret. Neither are some of the videos captured by military aircraft.
In 2024, AARO published a historical review of U.S. investigations into these phenomena. The result was disconcerting: it found no verifiable evidence of extraterrestrial technology, nor that the U.S. government had recovered beings from other worlds. Neither did it find empirical evidence of programs aimed at reverse-engineering alien technology.
But there is one detail that fuels the mystery. Some cases remain unresolved.
NASA also studies UAPs. Its conclusion is cautious: so far, there is no credible evidence of extraterrestrial life, nor proof that UAPs have an alien origin. However, it acknowledges that some phenomena lack sufficient data to determine what they were.
And while governments watch the skies, the SETI Institute is doing something even more fascinating: searching for signs of intelligence beyond Earth through radio telescopes, optical telescopes, and other technologies.
Has the United States ever had a Martian locked away in some secret lab?
To this day, there is no public, verifiable proof that allows for an affirmative answer.
Perhaps the true mystery is something else. Maybe we don't have visitors from the stars yet. Maybe we are only just beginning to discover that the universe is far too large for our solitude to be taken for granted.
And that, precisely, is what is unsettling: we don't know if anyone is out there. But we haven't proven we are alone, either.
